As I survey the political world, I feel sometimes depressed, sometimes frustrated, and usually helpless. We have in this country an extremely large government that is anything but accountable and whose actions consistently demonstrate a lack of concern for the God, the Constitution, and the people of this country. They tell us not to worry--they've got it covered. They know what is best for us. They'll make a bunch of laws to make sure we don't hurt ourselves, or if we do, we'll certainly have healthcare.
The question conservatives ask is, "How are we going to turn this nation around?" I admit, this question is one I have considered often. How are we going to get those people out of office and limit the power of government? How are we going to stop the government from encroaching on our freedoms? How are we going to keep socialism out of our borders? The assumption is that this is the good ol' U.S.A. and we'll always be free. "That could never happen here"--right?
The question is no longer when or how are we going to restore America's former glory. The question is now, "Will we be able to?" We may soon have to face the reality that the moral and economic foundations of this country have been undermined by humanistic socialism. I am not suggesting that we do not use every lawful means (and guns, too) to fight the advance of our enemies. We must take a stand. What I'm trying to say is simply this: we have to stop being naive.
Many of the things I read blow my mind. I cannot understand how our leaders are getting away with things like the bill that allowed for indefinite detention. I do not understand how Congress can continually vote themselves raises and exempt them from the restrictions they've placed on their fellow countrymen. My desire for justice flames up within me, as yours' might as well. How has it gotten this far? Our foundations are gone. Men are wicked. They are lazy. They are anti-god. Why are we surprised when they try to change our laws and take from us our freedoms? Spiritual warfare is a reality. We have been "neutral" for too long. We have to choose whom we will serve. We are facing such attacks on our religious freedom as we've never seen before. We're looking to Washington to defend those rights. Why are we surprised that they are not? They haven't defended the Constitution or Christianity for over half a century.
All this is to say that we may have to face hardship. We have a mindset in America that justice will reign and that the righteous will prevail. We will not have to face religious persecution because, after all, this is America! Satan loves when Christian's become complacent. He loves it when we think we're untouchable. It's time to wake up. Redeem the time, for the days are evil! In all likeliness, we're heading in a bad direction. We will probably have to face financial persecution, at the very least, for our faith. I'm not saying that's right, but it's reality. Instead of complaining and assuring ourselves that we still live in the most free country in the world, we need to brace ourselves for that which is to come.
Jesus assured His followers that they would face persecution. The Early Church, and many Christians since, have faced severe persecution. Why should we be any different? Indeed, we have allowed our religion to become watered down. Perhaps this is God trying us with fire. Perhaps this is God weeding out the hypocrites and purifying His Son's bride.
Pray. Be ready. Be watchful. Embrace persecution; through it we are sanctified. Have faith that all things work out to the good for those who are the called according to God's purpose. Sometimes justice won't be served here on Earth, but we can be assured that, as Matthew 5:10 says, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
